A free music school, on the map
MusicMap is map.ca's free music learning commons. It maps the knowledge, sounds, instruments, and skills that let a person take part in music — six launch instrument systems (piano, guitar, drums, voice, violin, ukulele) plus the computer keyboard almost everyone already has. Learning here costs nothing and needs no account. The practice tools being built — tuner, metronome, ear and rhythm games — run in your own browser, and microphone audio is never uploaded or kept. Teachers, venues, and instrument-repair shops put themselves on the map so a learner can find someone nearby.
Free to browse. No account, no sign-in, nothing to buy.
Free tools, no account
The tools run in your browser and nothing you play is recorded, uploaded or kept — anything that listens does its listening on your own device.
Games
Short games that are secretly the lessons. Every try counts: nothing is timed, and nothing is marked wrong.
The map.ca music commons
Public-domain and CC0 recordings, served from map.ca's own commons. Classical performances released to the commons, and 78 rpm sides old enough that the rights have run out everywhere, with the source credited on every track. The music keeps playing as you move around the site.
Why the map and the school share a site
Because they are the same idea. Someone hears a song from their own town, wants to play it, and finds the metronome, the games and the teachers on the same page as the pin.
